Traditionally, the Dongzhi festival is also a time to get together with family. One activity that takes place during these meetings is the making and eating of tangyuan or sticky rice balls over southern China, which symbolize reunion. For northern China, people usually eat dumplings on Dongzhi. He is said to be from Zhang Zhongjing in the Han Dynasty. On a cold winter day, he saw the poor suffer from frostbite in their ears. Feeling compassionate, he ordered his apprentices to make meatballs with lamb and other ingredients, and distribute them among the poor to keep them warm, to prevent their ears from frostbite. Since the dumplings were shaped like ears, Zhang named the dish “qùhán jiāoěr tāng” or dumpling soup that chases away the cold. Since then, it has been a tradition to eat dumplings on Dongzhi Day.
