Distribution and number of golf courses in the world

Golf is a global sport. By the end of 2020, there are 38081 golf courses in the world, distributed in 206 of 251 countries. The global diffusion rate is 82%.
 
However, golf is still concentrated geographically. 80% of the courses in the world are located in the top ten golf countries, including the United States, Japan, Britain (including England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales), Canada, Australia, Germany, France, South Korea, Sweden and China.

Africa: Overview.
 
Africa is the least developed region of golf. Africa accounts for 20% of the world's land area and 17% of the world's population, but golf courses only account for 2% of the world's total.
 
The average population per hole is 109,822, 8 times the world average of 14,306 people per hole


Asia & the Middle East: Overview.
 
In the past 20 years, the golf course facilities in Asia have grown tremendously. Japan (3140), South Korea (810), China (617), Thailand (317), and India (294), a new country on the list, have now entered the top 20 in terms of the number of golf courses.
 
The development of resorts has promoted the development of golf in the region. Phuket Island in Thailand and the South China Sea coast in Vietnam have become popular golf destinations.


Europe: Overview .
 
Europe accounts for half of the top 20 countries in terms of golf courses: the third is the UK (3101); Germany ranked sixth (1054); 7th place, France (811 seats); The ninth place is Sweden (650 seats); 11th place, Spain (493 seats); 14th place: Ireland (365 seats); The 15th place is the Netherlands (350 seats); 17th, Denmark (347 seats); The 19th place is Italy (312 seats).


North America, Central America and the Caribbean: an overview
 
In North America, 76% of golf courses are now public and open to golfers on a pay per round basis. North America accounts for 16% of the global land area, 8% of the world's population and 50% of the golf courses.
 
Five major golf countries in North America: the United States (16156), Canada (2564), Mexico (256), Dominican Republic (35), Puerto Rico (22).


Oceania: Overview.
 
Oceania shows the influence of Britain on the spread of golf in the world. The colonial history of Australia and New Zealand can be traced back to 1789. For countries with a number of courses, they are among the top in the world.
 
Australia has 1584 courts, ranking fifth; New Zealand has 416 courses, ranking 13th. Together, these two countries own 96% of the golf courses in the region.
 
Behind them are 15 in Papua New Guinea, 14 in Fiji and 14 in Guam.
 
In general, the vast Pacific region covered by Oceania accounts for 5% of the world's land area, 0.5% of its population and 5% of its golf courses.


South America: Overview.
 
Golf courses in South America have always been dominated by private clubs - accounting for 51% of all courses. Rankings of the five major golf countries (courses) in South America: Argentina (348), Brazil (126), Chile (80), Colombia (67), Venezuela (22).
